MIDI and recordings of drawing , erasing, and a pencil dropping were edited by changing pitch, reversing and separating transients to create clip-like sounds. These were then set into a Protools timeline for their placement.

Sun Tunnels X
2026
Software: Pro Tools, Sound Particles, Adobe After Effects
This piece contains low frequencies and clicks
The basis of this piece is the American artist Nancy Holt’s (1938 - 2014) earth work Sun Tunnels (1973-1976). Located in the Great Basin Desert in Utah, the work is comprised of four concrete cylinders set in an X formation (Overall dimensions: 9 ft. 2-1/2 in. x 68 ft. 6in. x 53 ft. (2.8 x 20.8 x 16.2 m); length on the diagonal: 86 ft. (26.2 m).
Large enough to stand inside, the tunnels are placed so that they are aligned with the rising and setting sun during the summer and winter solstices, and are perforated with the constellations of Draco, Perseus, Columba, and Capricorn (Holt Smithson Foundation). The work is experiential: as the sun or moon move across the sky the perforated cement allows the constellations to dapple the interior surface: they too move with the light. The Sun Tunnels can be seen as highlighting the almost incomprehensible vastness of the sun, moon, and stars, bringing them down to earth.
With Holt’s Sun Tunnels in mind, in Sound Particles I created a stereo bed track for the piece. The specifications for the bed track were as follows:40 hz 60 hz 100 hz One particle diffuser set inside a cylinder 20 x 10 m with delay, set on an axis. One particle diffuser set outside cylinder 20 x 10 m (roughly the same dimensions as Holt’s). Mic XY Preset: Bats out of a Cave
The Sound Particles audio make up the structure of the concrete tunnel (a stereo track panned closely together). Think of the words: panning, particles, molecules.
We are inside a tunnel facing south.
If we think of the sun passing through the sky from east to west (L to R) and passing through the perforations of the concrete cylinder dappling its interior surface, then the sun spots would pan from R to L (west to east).
For these movements, I used the test tones, and added the two audio check low rumbles for a kind of “wind” sound. I liked these sounds because they were “ready-made”: and also one could say the “building blocks” of sound. Think: particles, molecules, DNA. These flicker in and out of the base stereo track. I intentionally kept some of the clicks of the non tip-and-tailed clips that had been duplicated in Pro Tools, as though the wind was whipping at your hair and clothing.
